there are haunters of the silence...
... ghosts that hold the heart and brain.
✫☆ --Crowflight watched her, painful embers dancing behind blue flames. He shuddered briefly at her touch, almost leaning into it, before he came back to his senses and gave her a half-smile, pressing a muzzle delicately against her cheek. (panic rushed through him; she was okay, she had to be. his insides were fluttering and shaking and twittering and he couldn't stand it) The sun broke over the line of the horizon and flooded the clearing with a yawning light, but it instilled little hope in the deputy, the strings of dread tugging at him. They wouldn't last. Cobalt optics flickered briefly over to his partner with a rue smile and the creases of his face suddenly darkened to a deep frown. She wasn't going to make it if he didn't do something now, and fast too.
His vision blurred, a mottled memory cast across his mind like an old film.
''... Oceanpaw, why'd you bring me out here? he meowed lazily, his slender frame slung across the field. ' We're supposed to be trainin' and I promised Lightpaw that I'd meet her later.
She looked at him for a moment, eyes pained, before lifting her head and smiling, the act lighting up her entire face. His blue eyes flickered to her briefly and he blinked, surprised at thebeautyfound there, before shaking his head. Lightpaw was prettier.
W-well, it's j-just...' She took a deep breath and her tender gaze flitted to the site, a forlorn smile stretching across gentle waves of silver. .. It's pretty, isn't it?', she finally mumbled, the slight blush of his cheeks that he'd grown to adore a shocking contrast to her pure, moonlight cheeks.
Yeah, he meowed carelessly back, turning over on his back to stare at the blanket of twinkling gray above Smiling to himself, he began to hum. It was low, carefree and something that made her heart twinge. Why couldn't they have more moments like this?
Her thoughts were broken when she tripped over a rock, being clumsy again, and let out a surprised yelp. Crowpaw blinked, opening his eyes, and then looked at her before throwing himself into a fit of laughter. She flushed, ... d-don't laugh!. She stumbled to her paws and winced before tumbling further down the hill, a soundless scream escaping her lips.
Bouncing to his paws, Crowpaw danced to her side and grasped her paw in his own as he pulled her up, a breathless smile gracing his sculpted face. Her cheeks burned and he laughed again, One day, I'm gonna miss that.
Crowflight teared his gaze away from the mottled memory, just flickers of photographs that burned his brain, as the badger rushed towards him again, a giant paw smashing down on thin air. The tom swiftly jumped, bare strength pressing against the muscles of his legs, and landed on the limb as it made it's way down, a dark frown present on his once blissful face. His eyes were a darkened indigo, encircled in frightening flames of shadowed sapphire, and an ever present reminder of the constant passed that cursed him, plaguing him with memories that should've been long gone after Oceansong died.
His throat tightened at the image of his deceased lover and he let out an agonized hiss as the badger made it's mark, raking large claws down his side. He did not stumble or falter in his perfect steps, but instead shot forward, claws outstretched, as he jumped upon the badger's torn face, digging the knives of his pads deeper into the creatures back. A low, almost gutteral, growl escaped his throat, slipping past his lips quicker than anything, as he stroke again, smacking the snapping jaws with a paw that made the much larger creature whimper, with gleaming ivories deep into the muddled neck. It wasn't just a badger anymore; this was for Oceansong.
So lost in his anger, his bittersweet rage, that he didn't notice the sharp snarl that escaped the badger or the furious gleam that entered the black, beady eyes. The badger flew and swept across the air, making Crowflight fling off of him. Thankfully enough, the deputy blinked and gathered his thoughts, the faintest of sighs escaping him, before he leaned back on his hauches, claws gripping the earth as he tried to keep his balence. A flicker of movement caugh his eyes and he frowned again as he saw the injured she-cat at his side that he had forgotten, as if the sharpest of knives were twisting into his heart.
Deeper.
And Deeper.
His legs trembled and the tom was thrown back into reality. This wasn't Lightpool he was protecting, this wasn't Oceansong he had to save. God, this wasn't even Robinwing that he was trying to revenge. The painful flickers in his mind were burning now, threads of silk turning into poisonous flames that tainted his soul. This wasn't anyone else but Eclipsedmoon and somehow, for some reason, that made it more painful than ever to see her hurt.
He had failed, failed again.
Save her, she breathed in his ear in a way that made him shiver and he breathed in sharply. Save her like you couldn't save me.
He looked at the injured she-cat wildly, cheeks flushed and eyes wide, panic flitting behind almost childish eyes. His heart pounded in his ears as he ran to her, his - no her - new resolve ringing almost painfully in his ears and he lifted his eyes, breathless, in her direction, all of his emotions (confusion, sadness, agony) suddely out in the open. The dark flames of blue in his eyes suddenly bursted, as if he was that same Crowpaw who his mother hated, into an array of shocking colors, splashing waves that covered his entire expression.
Come on, he murmured under his breath, half to himself, sweeping his tail across her side as he tried supporting her with his own shoulder, cobalt optics flickering in the direction of the badger - who was still recovering from a hasty blow. His breath was coming in short gasps and a frustrated hiss escaped his silver lips as he watched the clumsy badger lope toward them, a furious glint present in it's black beads. Before she could move, he ducked his head and heaved her onto his back, jaw tightening with effort.
The warm light of the fireflies wove through the thick tangle of foliage as he bolted through the ferns, the badger's thick, stamping steps right behind them. Soft, gentle, and calming breezes whispered silently across the almost barren fields, weaving their way along the dampened ground and tickling the newborn life that sprouted from beneath lightly as it passed by. The mighty ball of fire that glowed fiercely in the sky was slowly making it’s descend upon the land, highlighting the never-ending sky with different shades of color and brilliance. Crowflight - the beautiful, breathtaking tom that everyone misunderstood for their own fantasy prince - slowed as they came upon a cave, feeling his muscles almost break at the strain. He dropped her gently on the grass, murmuring soft words to her as he weaved against the camouflage and carried her into the cave (just in case she had fainted from effort like he was about to; if not, he should would get clawed for it later), her silver fur grasped gingerly by his teeth. He flopped back onto the cold stone, eyes closed as he tried to regain his breath and the world had dropped around him, as if he was falling and dying and losing all of it.
But the prince was still running, saving his princess from the danger of all of it. Maybe he'd save them, save her.
Like he hadn't been able to before.
Someone broods there nameless and bodiless,
Conscious and lonely, deathless and infinite,
And, sole in a still eternal rapture,
Gathers all things to his heart for ever.
