his tail flicked back and forth as he lowered his back end to the ground and sat. blue eyes darkened in a glower as he gazed downward. the earth at his white paws was loose and recently disturbed. the way he was concentrating, you'd expect something miraculous to be happening. but, no, he was just sitting, staring down at the hole in the ground. his large bulk was bent over, head lowered to gaze down into the darkness.
definitely a badger, he told himself, nodding slightly. the great beast was probably a few foxlengths beneath his paws, snoring in the mid-day heat. he stared down into the den, hating its creator simply because the creature existed.
the patched tom wasn't completely unlike a badger himself. his body was stained only black and white, more random than a badger and lacking the gray. blackrush's shoulders were wide and strong, his claws long and sharp. he was a formidable enemy against any cat or creature. perhaps i should have been named badger-rush, he mused, but then decided it was rather unrealistic since badgers never seemed to do much rushing.
getting a handful of warriors gathered would be the smartest thing to do, blackrush knew. but he hated the thought of the large creature being able to slip out of its den while he was away. instead, he reasoned, a patrol would stumble upon the waiting tom eventually. hopefully before dark. he settled his body down against the ground, lifting one large white paw to lick the dust from it, ears flicking back in annoyance.
blackrush was ever the independent warrior. from the time he was born, the tom never seemed to rely on anyone. perhaps that was just the way his father had raised him. darkrush had produced a son who was as exactly like him as anyone figured was possible. the two looked almost the very same. they spoke with the same quiet and low voice. both toms had always been spitting out curses, insults, and snorts of disgust. if ever there were two toms completely disgusted with the universe, these were they. the only real obvious difference between them was their eyes. darkrush has always had dark, gray-tinged brown eyes. blackrush, though, had been born with soft, water-blue eyes.
