blackbirdit was twilight, and the hooting of owls interrupted the silence of the ending day. the golden sun that usually kept the tealclan territory bright and full of light was fading, being taken away by moon and stars as it was their time to shine. the extremely thin tom sat on the edge of a rock that had been warmed by the sun during the day, but now was starting to be replaced by the coolness of the night. his paws were still; he didn't want to go back to the camp just yet, but to sit and enjoy the technicolor sunset as the hues of pink and purple splashed up against the darkening sky. it was the tom cat's favorite time of day, and he often came out here to just get away from the noise and yowling of tealclan and just relax.
blackbird could see storm clouds in the distance, probably over ravineclan at this time but quickly approaching his position. he enjoyed the rain, as it dripped down his black and white checkered pelt and through the raging stream that surrounded his camp. it made the day serene, and he wanted to be like the rain: moving silently and leaving new life in its path. blackbird sighed, and as the sun began to disappear behind the mountains in the horizon, he started to get up from his rock. it was time to return to his camp. he couldn't stay there all day, what would his leader think?! blackbird was constantly obsessed about what others thought of him, and if he was in trouble for not telling where he was then what would become of his reputation? as medicine cat of tealclan, blackbird was constantly trying to make sure that his clan trusted him and thought well of his actions. padding softly toward the direction of the stream, blackbird hopped over a small badger set that seemed to have been abandoned for ages. there were no paw prints around it, yet there was something moving from inside.
the tom turned around cautiously to face the creature, he could probably fight it off. he growled slightly, hoping to scare it before it scared him. his tiny body was inferior compared to the rest of his clan but he could still fight as well as them. peering closely into the hole with his honey golden orbs, and tilting his head in a bit further, blackbird yowled. a small pigeon flew out at him from the hole, making blackbird sprint away in horror and confusion. for some reason the tom had thought something menacing would have been in that hole, and of course, nothing was to be afraid of. as he realized that he had been scared off by a pigeon, blackbird chuckled a bit to himself. how could he be afraid of something that small? but that was probably what other cats thought about him. blackbird's brow furrowed. there was fight in the tiniest of them, and blackbird knew that best. his black and white patched fur stood on end still, and he tried to calm himself down. he was easily frightened, and seeing the pigeon had scared the living daylights out of his tiny body.
he peered around the tree where he was hiding with his small, triangular head and perked his ears up acutely. the pigeon seemed to be making its nest in the old badger set, hidden from the rest of the area. blackbird chuckled softly, and crouched down into a hunting position. if that bird was going to scare him like that then he was going to bring it back to the camp for a meal. usually he didn't go out on hunting missions, but today he could make an exception. maybe he could grab some chervil on the way back, also. at least then the other cats wouldn't wonder where he was, and he could say that he was hunting and herb collecting, instead of just relaxing. the pigeon was pecking lazily at the ground around the set, it had obviously forgotten about its recent encounter with a cat. rolling his eyes, blackbird stalked toward the pigeon, tail straight out behind him in motivation. the bird picked his head up from the ground in alertness to blackbird's approach, but the tiny cat was too quick for it. he pounced decisively at the pigeon, catching it as it started to fly up into the now cold night. landing back on the ground with the pigeon under his paws, blackbird gave a satisfied nod at his kill. looking up at the sky he realized that the stars had appeared and the light blue day had turned to darkness. as a kit his mother had died, and he wasn't sure if she was up there with the rest of starclan. his mother had killed another cat, brightflower, in a spat over a mate. of course, it was unreasonable, but he couldn't change the past. she was exiled when he was a kit, and he never really had a family. he had been taken in by another she-cat of course, but he couldn't stop thinking about her. he had known that his mother had died when her body was found in tealclan territory one day, but by then he didn't think much of her. but still, he had never seen her once in any of his dreams with starclan. it made him doubt that she was there - in starclan with the rest of the ancient cats. he was the medicine cat now, and although he was just a small cat, he had a giant heart. he could always find the goodness in everyone. yawning, blackbird turned toward camp. it was time to head home. he picked up the pigeon in his black and white maw and set off toward the tealclan camp, hastily picking up some herbs to excuse his absence along with his kill.
